In the city of Kraljevo, Serbia, local animal rescuer Goran Marinkovic dedicates his life to helping stray animals. Every day, he carries food with him to feed more than 100 abandoned dogs and cats that wander the streets without anyone to care for them.
But in March of last year, his routine took an unexpected turn when he encountered a tiny puppy who touched his heart in a way that changed both of their lives forever.
Discovering a Puppy in Need
“Passing a narrow pathway, I heard crying coming from the rocks,” Marinkovic told The Dodo. “She was cold, hungry and thirsty. I had food, so right away I gave her salami.”
The fragile puppy had been living near a pile of garbage, seeking shelter inside an old boot. Far too young to survive without her mother, she appeared to be completely alone. When Marinkovic approached, the little dog lay down on the ground, exposing her belly in complete surrender.
“She was exhausted,” Marinkovic explained. “She knew that I might be her only chance, so she lay down and surrendered to fate.”
A Second Chance at Life
Without hesitation, Marinkovic picked her up and rushed her to a veterinarian. Unsure whether she would survive after so many days exposed to the elements, he gave her the name Coco. To everyone’s relief, Coco proved to be a fighter.
As she regained her strength, her cheerful spirit became clear. “She loves people,” Marinkovic said. “She’s always cheerful.”
Finding a Forever Home
Photos of Coco quickly spread across Facebook, and Marinkovic received countless offers from people who wanted to adopt her. Wanting the very best for her future, he connected with a fellow rescuer who had experience with international adoptions.
Once Coco completed her vaccinations, she traveled to Germany, where a loving family was waiting for her.
A Happy Transformation
Just a year later, Coco is unrecognizable from the sick little puppy Marinkovic first found hiding in an old shoe. She has grown into a fluffy, joyful dog who enjoys adventures and family outings.
“[Coco] has a beautiful home and she is currently on vacation. I get pictures regularly — they’re at sea right now,” Marinkovic shared. “Every rescued dog from the street who finds a home is a victory for me.”
Hope for Other Stray Animals
Although Coco’s story is a happy one, thousands of dogs and cats in Serbia are still waiting for help. Marinkovic continues his daily mission, determined to give more animals a chance at the life they deserve.
Thanks to people like him, each rescue brings hope that one day, every stray will find a safe and loving home.
