While in the US, cats are considered to be a majority-owned pet, dogs still attract more attention from their owners. This could be attributed to the fact that most people don't know much about cats, so they have no idea what attention they need. Cats are considered separate and independent, so they need less attention. Cats can take care of themselves in a way dogs cannot, but that does not mean they like to be left alone.
